Your vehicle’s cylinder head is key to the performance of the internal combustion engine.  The shape of the combustion chamber, inlet passages and ports (and to a lesser extent the exhaust) determines a major portion of the volumetric efficiency and compression ratio of the engine.

Engines with higher volumetric efficiency will generally be able to run at higher RPM and produce more overall power due to less parasitic power loss moving air in and out of the engine.  A high compression ratio is desirable because it allows increased power at the moment of ignition and the extraction of more useful work from that power by expanding the hot gas to a greater degree.
