Dashboard not working properly? VRS can help.
All common dashboards repaired or exchanged, whether your dashboard needs recalibration or conversion from kilometres to miles.
Why would I need to reprogram or recalibrate my dashboard?
Over the years many manufacturers have been replacing the old style mechanical dashboards, for new up-to-date digital ones, which are cheaper and faster to produce.
Unfortunately, as with all new developments, problems can arise. The dashboard relies on information stored within a memory device called an Electrically Erasable Programmable Read Only Memory (EPROM). This device is susceptible to involuntary electrical disturbances caused by the vehicles electrical system, which in turn can course corruption of the information that is stored within.
What is digital mileage correction?
Digital Mileage correction or mileage adjustment becomes necessary when the mileage on the electronic display differs from the value which you believe to be correct. This is where a correction service can help you in returning the displayed value back to its original value.
Why do I need mileage correction?
There are many reasons why you might mileage correction. Many dashboards develop electronic faults that cause the mileage to jump or change to an invalid reading. Motors and gauges also fail in this instance you might purchase either a new or second hand instrument cluster as this is often more cost effective. New dashboards have 0 miles on it. If it's a second hand one it could well have 100,000 miles on it or some other value from the donor car. Naturally you want it to show the correct mileage and that's where we can help, by electronically placing the correct mileage information onto the dashboard. Recent events include typo errors at the dealer where they enter e.g. 24,500 instead of 2,450 miles. If you face this problem where a new cluster has been fitted by a dealer insist on the correct value being put on the car or ask us to do this for you and we will provide you with a receipt for you to give to them to reimburse you for the cost.
Is it legal?
If you need to change the mileage for any of the reasons above this is perfectly legal. It is however, illegal if you knowingly sell the vehicle without informing the buyer of the true mileage. We can only provide a correction service for reasons similar to those stated above. You must inform a buyer of the new mileage if you believe it to be incorrect.

Common Failures
Audi
-
A4 - Fuel gauge is the common failure, but temperature gauges failure is not far behind.
-
A6 - Tachometer reading faulty and the Abs and oil lights staying on are also other faults; BRAKE FLUID LEVEL warning notice displays on centre display, often caused by an internal problem in the cluster; Symptoms can also be caused by other faulty components on vehicle.
-
A8 - instrument cluster can fail through a loss of gauges. The most common problems are the fuel and temperature gauges / displays.
-
TT - Dashboard centre display failing or fuel gauge problems reading incorrectly.
|
BMW
-
The instrument cluster can fail on certain gauges- loss of rev counter, speedo, fuel gauge etc. Other problem include loss of illumination of certain areas.
|
GM
-
1999+ - GM Instrument Clusters fitted to trucks and SUVs are commonly failing by having inoperative or sticking gauges. The information display can also intermittently turn off.
|
FIAT
-
Ulysses - Notchy or inoperative rev / speedo (this is the type with gear driven meter movements).
-
Bravo 600 - Speedo and rev counter inoperative and mileage disappears.
-
Punto - Complete loss off all displays, flicking needles.
|
FORD
-
Focus - Can cause car to cut out. All power lost to dashboard.
|
LEXUS
-
Early-Mid 90s Lexus LS400 - commonly fail by losing part of their backlighting and/or losing all or part of some gauge needle lighting. They can also have non-working, or slow-working gauges.
|
MERCEDES
-
A Class - Canbus error causes dash to fail completely.
-
2000 era C and E Class - Mercedes instrument cluster (Dashboard, Speedometer) commonly fails by losing part of its odometer, temperature displays and / or also the time display will be garbled and un-readable.
-
1990s SL / S Class - Early style Mercedes instrument clusters seem to be fairly reliable, but some now have problems with gauges not working or multiple warning lights staying on.
-
S Class - The S Class is fitted with a dash that, when illuminated, does look rather attractive. However, when the illumination (back lighting) fails it is an all together different story. Problems include no lighting, partial lighting and / or flickering or intermittent lighting.
-
SLK - The Mercedes SLK dash / instrument cluster can suffer from a faulty fuel gauge. The reading will be erratic, often dropping to zero, then eventually failing completely. Be warned! The SLK can also suffer from a faulty fuel level sender. Lights stay on at all times. Have this checked first!
-
GZR - Shows all 9s (9999999) in the mileage usually because of power spike.
|
MITSUBISHI
-
Diamante - speedo failure.
|
NISSAN
-
Micra K12 - Sometimes indicators fail, i.e. tell tale lamp on dashboard fails.
-
Terrano Dial - Problems with fuel gauge and speedo. (Note: This dash is also fitted to a lot of Ford Explorers.)
|
RENAULT
-
Kangoo - Lights and dials flicker even when key is removed.
-
Laguna - Common problems on the new shape Laguna dash's include intermittent loss of rev counter and speedo. Commonly all the warning lights will come on. Failing components inside the cluster are to blame. Also fitted to other Renaults including Scenic, Megane, Clio etc.
|
SAAB
-
Saab 9-3 & 9-5 - The main problem is the LCD display. Other problems can be back illumination and/or gauge issues.
|
SEAT LEON
-
Seat Leons are prone to instrument cluster failure. The most common failures are the fuel and the temp gauges not working or reading erratic values.
|
TOYOTA
-
Landcruiser - These are prone to having faulty Gauges. The most common is the tacho giving erratic readings, Jumping from 2000 too 4000Rpm instantly then not going over 4000Rpm when the engine clearly is.
|
VOLKSWAGEN
-
Beetle (new shape) - Common problems include loss of illumination and/or loss of gauges (i.e. fuel gauge or speedo is intermittent). A new dash from the dealer is not only expensive, but has to be re-programmed to the car. A lot of VW dashboards incorporate the immobiliser system. This may have to be matched to the ECM and keys. The cost can spiral out of control!!!
-
Passat - Common problems include loss of water temp and petrol gauges, speedo, rev counter and trip counter not working.
-
mk3 Golf, Jetta, Polo - The mk3 Golf and it's family (Jetta, Polo and Cabrio) can all suffer from a failing dash. Common problems will be a loss of gauges, but maybe even a completely dead cluster.
